Almost half of German households can now book a gigabit fiber optic connection. This is revealed by a current analysis from Verivox, which has examined the development of broadband supply in Germany. Within just three years, the share of households with access to fast fiber optic internet has more than doubled. This positive development is a sign of progress in the field of digital infrastructure.

Regional Differences in Fiber Optic Availability

Despite the overall increase in fiber optic connections, there are significant regional differences in Germany. While Northern Germany, particularly the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, occupy the top positions in the availability of gigabit fiber optics, other regions lag behind. Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg are examples of federal states where expansion is progressing more slowly.

The reasons for these differences are manifold. A crucial role is played by the topography of the regions as well as the early collaborations between municipalities and internet providers. In Northern Germany, many cities and municipalities have already invested early in the expansion of fiber optic infrastructure, which is now positively affecting availability.

In Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg, on the other hand, there are still numerous rural areas that are not sufficiently supplied with fast internet. Here, the challenges are greater, as the population density is lower and investments in infrastructure often do not seem profitable. This leads to many households in these regions continuing to rely on slower internet connections.

The availability of fast internet has far-reaching effects on society. Especially in times of remote work and digital learning, a stable and fast internet connection is essential. The increased demand for digital services has further intensified the need for comprehensive fiber optic expansion.

The federal government has set itself the goal of further expanding the digital infrastructure in Germany by 2030. A particular focus is placed on rural areas to close the digital divide between urban and rural regions. The promotion of fiber optic projects and the expansion of 5G networks are central components of this strategy.

The Verivox analysis shows that fiber optic expansion in Germany is on a good path, but there is still much work ahead of us. The challenges in the less well-served regions must be addressed to ensure comprehensive access to fast internet.
