In the European Union, unused raw materials worth 65 billion euros are stored in the form of electronic waste. These valuable materials, including rare earths and precious metals, could be better utilized through a rethink in product design and recycling. The consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the NGO Cradle to Cradle advocate for circular design to secure raw materials from old devices and reduce dependence on imports.
Growing Electronic Waste and Its Consequences
The amount of electronic waste in the EU is steadily increasing. According to estimates, millions of tons of electronic devices are disposed of each year, containing valuable materials. These devices, which are often not properly recycled, not only pose an environmental burden but also represent a missed opportunity for raw material recovery. BCG emphasizes that recycling these materials is not only ecologically sensible but also economically advantageous.
A circular design could help extend the lifespan of products and reduce the amount of electronic waste. By developing devices that are easier to repair and recycle, companies could not only improve their environmental footprint but also save costs. BCG and Cradle to Cradle stress that a rethink in product development is necessary to utilize raw materials more efficiently.
Recovering Raw Materials from Electronic Waste
The recovery of raw materials from electronic waste is a complex process that is gaining importance. Currently, only about 20 to 30 percent of valuable materials from old devices are recovered. The remaining 70 to 80 percent end up in landfills or are disposed of improperly. This not only leads to a loss of valuable resources but also increases environmental pollution.
BCG and Cradle to Cradle therefore call for increased collaboration between governments, companies, and consumers to raise recycling rates. Through legal requirements and incentives, companies could be motivated to develop more sustainable products and promote the return of old devices. Such an approach could not only secure the supply of raw materials in the EU but also reduce dependence on imports.
Another aspect is raising consumer awareness about the importance of recycling. Many people are unaware of the valuable materials in their old devices and often dispose of them thoughtlessly. Awareness campaigns could help sharpen the understanding of electronic waste and its value.
The EU has already taken steps to increase recycling rates and promote the circular economy. Initiatives such as the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) aim to improve the return and recycling of electronic waste. Nevertheless, there is still much to be done to achieve the ambitious goals and activate the unused raw materials in the EU.
The demands of BCG and Cradle to Cradle are part of a larger trend towards more sustainable economic practices.
