Data Sovereignty: Key to AI Utilization in Germany

Artificial intelligence is gaining importance in German companies. Data sovereignty is becoming the decisive criterion for the use of local AI solutions.

In 2026, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered extremely significant in German companies. According to the Bitkom study "Artificial Intelligence in Germany," 81% of companies regard AI as important. The focus has increasingly shifted to data sovereignty, especially for medium-sized enterprises. They are no longer asking whether to use AI, but rather where and how to implement these technologies.

A central advantage of local AI applications is full data sovereignty. When business-critical algorithms or sensitive customer data are processed by external providers, unpredictable risks arise. A recent study by IONOS and YouGov from spring 2026 shows that 53% of the surveyed German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) express deep distrust towards non-European AI tool providers. These concerns have led to data sovereignty becoming a crucial economic purchasing criterion.

Growing Trend Towards Local AI Solutions

The IONOS study "German Mittelstand Wants AI but Distrusts Overseas Providers" confirms that 36% of companies prefer a provider for AI solutions from Germany or Europe. In the Bitkom study, even 93% of companies express the desire to consider local providers before selecting AI solutions for use in their businesses. These figures highlight the clear need for local AI solutions that meet the specific requirements and legal frameworks in Germany.

Additionally, the Bitkom study shows that 69% of the population prefers an AI provider from Germany. This preference is also reflected in the decisions of companies, which increasingly rely on local providers to address the challenges of data sovereignty and the strict European regulations. Acceptance of local solutions is growing as companies want to maintain control over their data.

Technological Autonomy and Cost Efficiency

Dependence on external providers carries risks that can lead companies into a dangerous vendor lock-in trap. Price increases, model discontinuations, or sudden changes in data protection regulations abroad can significantly jeopardize operational activities. Local AI solutions, which often rely on highly specialized open-source models, provide companies with technological autonomy and independence.

Another advantage of local AI systems is measurable cost efficiency. Instead of unpredictable, scalable token fees, companies invest once in dedicated hardware or private server structures. This allows for long-term planning of operating costs and protects against sudden financial burdens from external providers.

The shift towards local AI solutions is not only a reaction to distrust towards foreign providers but also a strategic decision to secure one's competitiveness. Companies that rely on local AI can optimize their processes while ensuring compliance with strict European data protection regulations.

The Bitkom study and the IONOS study confirm that the demand for local AI solutions in Germany continues to grow. Companies increasingly recognize the advantages associated with using AI from domestic sources and are opting for solutions that meet their specific requirements.
